Our first exhibition in Canada, and also the first transcontinental exhibition on our platform: [MOVEMENT] deals with the opportunities, changes and challenges of reconstructing public space, the loss and safekeeping of culture of remembrance.

  • Situated in a former industrial neighborhood of Toronto that is undergoing a process of renewal, the exhibition focuses on the changes this brings to both the public space and the people living there. The works are media art interventions: We see bodies dance, both on a cosmic and human scale, tumble through intricate animation designs, being transported back in time to visit distant memories, and with any luck, we might even meet a god or two on our journey.

  • PIX FILM Collective is a production and exhibition group, governed by independent practicing artists, and founded to further the establishment and operation of a gallery/working/study space for artists with interest and practice of multiple disciplines in visual and media arts. Their Studio Immersion Programme, supported by the Petman Foundation, provided grants for nine Canadian artists, to create works of art that deal with an urban area in motion.

During the First World War, the city of Toronto expanded as new factories were built to meet the needs of the Canadian war effort. The area around Dupont, Geary and Christie Street became an industrial area. Workers' houses and barracks were added, then schools and infrastructure. During this time, Toronto artists were drawn to the landscape and colors of a growing community. Murals were painted that were only rediscovered decades later. After years of neglect, the area is now in a process of gentrification: shopping malls, apartment buildings and single-family homes as well as small bars and pretty stores are upgrading the area, but also displacing the old, lived-in. We want to capture and accompany this transition together with Toronto's artists.
