A spontaneous exchange with local artists led to the first exhibition of the Artificial Museum in Germany at the Diaologfelder Eins “Drag & Drop” and was the beginning of a multi-layered urban expansion in the city of Chemnitz: In the context of a residency program, our artistic director Litto researched her performative practice for the multi-year series “Reterritorialized Spaces”, where she was met with great interest by artists of the city.

On the topic of digitality in urban space, we invite artists to the Sonnenberg in Chemnitz. They translate their visions and fantasies on the topic into interventions in urban space and counter (apparent) science fiction scenarios in everyday life with real spaces for experience and experimentation.

  • Motivated by the new possibilities seen in Littos work, the desire arose for a collaboration between the Chemnitz art scene and the Artificial Museum. With the help of Jascha Ehrenreich, an AR exhibition was developed in the artistic center of Chemnitz, the Sonnenberg district with Zietenstraße, shedding light on the diverse background and ongoing transformation of a so-called infamous quarter.

  • The district of Sonnenberg developed from meadowland to a monastery village, became a military base and eventually an industrial and working-class district, and was finally declared an areal monument. Between the old buildings, which were poorly managed for a long time, and the rigid and badly managed Plattenbau buildings, an arena of cultural friction emerged, repeatedly becoming the focus of social and socio-political discussions. Now, a young, alternative scene is breaking the tough narrative about a problematic district, in which neo-Nazis attempted to establish a “nationally liberated zone” around Lessingplatz in 2016. However, the district and its cultural institutions, such as Klub Solitär and Lokomov, see themselves as progressive, young and open communities with an activist approach.

We very much shared this awakening, the beginning of a flourishing in the midst of old institutions, as we had only recently established the Artificial Museum. The interweaving of the local scene, the history of the area and Litto's approach of re-territorialization through augmented reality were the beginning of a long-term artistic examination and collaboration, especially with Klub Solitär, where we returned in 2024 with an Artificial LAB workshop.
