Sakina Teyna comes from a Kurdish-Alevi family and fought in the mountains as part of the resistance before coming to Austria twenty years ago as a political refugee. Inspired by Ninetta from Strauss’s *Fürstin Ninetta*, she probes the shadows of the past and speaks in Kurdish about the connection between people, especially women. In her singing, she transforms Ninetta’s waltz melody into her fascinatingly dark, oriental timbre.
