Kelsenstraße was formerly called Marx-Meidlinger-Straße, a reference to its heavily trafficked connection between Meidling and St. Marx. On November 5, 1981, it was renamed after Hans Kelsen, the "architect" of the constitution. His work "On the Nature and Value of Democracy" highlights, among other things, the changing concept of freedom during a time of enormous political upheaval: the transition from monarchy to democracy. If all citizens are free, then law can only emanate from them, that is, from the people, and thus guarantee the freedom of the people. The constitution was signed on October 1, 1920, and came into force on November 10, 1920, one year after the State Treaty was ratified by the Constituent National Assembly on October 21, 1919. This officially established the name of the state as the Republic of Austria.
